Bogesund Slott

Bogesund Castle

Bogesund Castle has roots dating back to the 17th century and a rich history. It was built by Count Per Brahe the Younger (1602–1680), who had inherited the Bogesund peninsula. The original structure still forms the core of the present-day castle. Its layout, structural framework, and many interior features from the 1600s are well preserved. Inside, you’ll also find woodwork, tiled stoves, and wallpaper from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

In the 1860s, the castle was rebuilt in a medieval romantic style by its then-owner, Nils Albrekt von Lantingshausen von Höpken, who is buried in the family crypt within the castle chapel. During the renovation, four crenellated towers were added, along with two floors between the towers that house, among other things, a chapel, a dining hall, and a winter garden.

In 1946, the state forcibly acquired the castle and its grounds due to neglect, using a special law known as “Lex Bogesund” – legislation created specifically for this case and never used again. In 1949, Bogesund Castle was declared a listed historic building. Today, the castle, the park, and the nearby hostel are managed by the Swedish National Property Board.

Between 2010 and 2012, the castle received a new façade in the same color scheme as the 1860s. As no one has lived in the castle for over a hundred years, much of the original interior remains intact. The castle is only open to visitors through guided tours.

In the castle park, you’ll find a hostel, a summer café, and well-preserved workers’ cottages from the second half of the 19th century.
